A great Napa vintage year, coupled with a weak economy, equals a terrific opportunity for Cabernet lovers. I just got back from vacation (10 days in 75 degree Jackson Hole, Wyoming - Heaven...), and when I go on vacation, I always ship a case of wine ahead to meet me there. In this case, I shipped a case of assorted Cabs. While all were excellent (I always send the good stuff for vacation), two wines stood out from the pack. I offer my notes below, and special pricing as noted.
Groth, Oakville Reserve Cabernet, 2006 $99 or $85 for 6 or more (regular $150)
If money were no object, I could drink this wonderful Cab every night and not complain. It is possibly the best Cabernet Sauvignon I've tasted in 5 years. The wine is absolutely flawless, beginning with concentrated dark fruit flavors accented by luscious tobacco and toasty cedar on the finish, which lasts a good 60 seconds. The grapes for the Reserve Cabernet come from 10-year old vines in an 871 acre estate vineyard in Oakville bordering Conn Creek, and a 9 iron from Screaming Eagle and Plumpjack vineyards. Interestingly, these same vineyards were first planted in Cabernet in 1974 by Justin Meyer, and the grapes were used in early vintages of Silver Oak. As with most winery owners, Dennis & Judy Groth made their money in the business world before entering the wine business. Dennis was a founding partner in a little company positioned in a risky new electronics field - video games, and the company was Atari. In 1984, Atari was sold, and Groth took his cash-out and bought the vineyards that now produce this stunning wine. For ratings buffs - Wine Spectator rated the 2006 Groth Oakville Reserve Cabernet 95 points.
Hall Estate Cabernet, Napa, 2006
$37.00 or $33.00 for 6 or more (regularly $42.00)
If you haven't discovered Hall wines yet, you should make the effort, and the 2006 Cabernet is a good place to start. Priced right at just $37.00 in this offer, this wine over-delivers in so many ways. First, a little background on Hall. Craig Hall is a Texan and chairman of Hall Financial Group, and he is best known as a real estate developer, art collector and former part-owner in the Dallas Cowboys. Kathryn Hall grew up in California where her family has been in the wine business for 30 years. Educated as an attorney, Kathryn co-founded the North Texas Food Bank and served as U.S. Ambassador to Austria from 1997 to 2001. Together, the Halls have built THE state-of-the-art wine making facility in Napa. They practice totally organic farming, and the newly opened winery is the only California winery to receive the LEED Gold Certification, awarded to businesses that demonstrate energy conservation and respect for the environment. As for the pedigree of their wines, the Halls purchased the famed Sacrashe vineyard in Rutherford as the cornerstone for their vineyard management program. Further, they hired Steve Leveque as winemaker. Steve earned his spurs as winemaker for Mondavi (11 years) and most recently at Chalk Hill. This formidable combination has produced a string of highly rated single-vineyard wines, and now has released this fantastic, affordable Cab. The 2006 Estate Cab definitely shows it's Rutherford roots with rich black cherry and currant dominating the entry, followed by roasted espresso on the long finish. Wine Spectator awarded the wine 94 points!
I have a case of each of these wines in my cellar at home. Quantities are limited, so place your orders now.
